How to Contact Your State Level Elected Officials:

Education policy is mostly under the juristiction of states, so contacting your state representative would be the best way to see changes in the schools in your state. To contact your state level lawmakers, you can go to congress.gov and click on the state you live in. After clicking on your state, you will be brought to the website for your state government and can contact legislatures through their website.

If you would like to contact local officals (your city or county), you can go to usa.gov

What to do When You Contact

  • Stick to ONE topic
  • Leave your address so they know you are a constituent.
  • Tell a story or give an example of why this issue or topic is important to you and others.
  • Make sure to thank them for their time.

My Actions Towards Education

Check of items as you go:

  • Step 1: Educate yourself on the early signs of mental illness.
  • Step 2: Have open conversations with family and friends where you: 1) Tell them you're there to support them and 2) Educate them on early symptoms.
  • Step 3: Contact school board about including mental health in health class and requiring teacher training on the earl signs of mental illness and what to do if they see these.
  • Step 4: Contact state lawmakers to require education on mental health in all public schools and require training on the early signs for all teachers at public schools.
  • Step 5: Contact city councilmembers or state lawmakers and demand mandantory extensive training for police officers on how to handle and help in mental health crises.
